About:China Visa-free Policy

Train travel Laos to Kunming

I wish to travel on International train from Luang Prabang to Kunming. I am entitled to visa free entry (Australian) Will there be time to get entry at border or will I need to get a visa before travel?
My alternative is train to Boten and cross by road to Mengla. Would that be correct?

You can get entry at the border and no need to get a visa before travel. Under the visa free policy you can enter China through any open port, so by road is accepted. But the immigration staff may ask for a ticket to leaving China for another country or region within 30 days.
