About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can 144h free transit be used when staying in a third country ?

I am a French citizen currently staying in Singapore and I am looking for a visa that will allow me to do a trip Singapore-Shanghai-Singapore. Would this 144h free transit work ? Do you confirm that there is no formalities to complete before taking the plane and that I can simply show up at Shanghai's airport with my Singapore visa ?
Thank you !

That's clearly not transit in your case so you'll need a visa. The term "third country" means a country other than China and the country you departed from, and it has nothing to do with your country of residence.
