About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Canada-Beijing-want to take train to Hong Kong

Would I qualify for the 144 hour visa if, when I landed in Beijing, I had not yet purchased a train ticket to Hong Kong. I understand you can only buy tickets in person. Any suggestions for how to get around this? Can I buy an airline ticket and then cancel it when I purchase the train ticket?

There's no way around this, you have to purchase the ticket prior to arrival. Otherwise the airline will not let you on board.
