72 or 144 hour visa - can I visit Great Wall?

I hope to visit Beijing on way to Australia on 72/144 hour free transit. First, does 144 hour free transit apply in Beijing (not clear on British or Chana government site)? Second, it is ok to take Great Wall tour in Beijing which goes to outskirts of city? Thanks.
