Bangkok Beijing London May 2018 on UK passport

I tried calling the Beijing airport number maybe a recorded message but orobably in Chinese. Called Manchester consul they said 72 hour free transit not available if flying back to home country.
Called London embassy and was told probably didn't' need visa but referred to website where I started. Fairly thoroughly confused. Can anyone advise definitive response please?

It's a waste of time calling embassies, consulates, airports or airlines. If you fly Thailand-PEK-London on a UK passport and non-stop flights it is totally straightforward: it's clearly compliant for 72 hours visa-free transit in BJ.
