About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

From Almaty to Bangkok via Hangzhou

Hello,
I am flying from Almaty to Hangzhou with a layover in Urumqi (Layover at the airport 9:50 hours) and from Hangzhou (Layover at the airport 03:50) to Bangkok with a layover in Kunming (Layover at the airport 9:20 hours). I am a Russian citizen. Do I need a visa for this itinerary? I am particularly concerned about the situation in Urumqi. The total time spent in China is 22:40.
Thank you!

Alex, Urumqi is not an obstacle any more because it can be used for 24 hour visa free transit purposes in the same way as all other airports, especially if you are arriving to Urumqi using a Chinese registered airline.

However, you will not be able to travel through China based on your itinerary because your entire transit time is noticeably longer than 24 hours. I can see that you have calculated your transit time, but you forgot to count also the flights between Urumqi and Hangzhou and Hangzhou and Kunming. Those are domestic flights, so they also belong to the entire transit time. In reality, the transit time is counted starting from your first scheduled arrival in China, until your last scheduled departure from China. In your case, this is, unfortunately, longer than 24 hours.

To conclude, you will have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance, preferably a transit (G) visa because that one is the easiest to obtain. I'm sorry for bringing you these unfavorable news.
