About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Seoul-Shanghai-Chengdu-SFO

Can I use the 144-free VISA to overnight in Shanghai and then use the 72-hour free transit in Chengdu?

No. Two stops limits you to 24 hours in China unless you have a visa.
