About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA-Hong Kong-Guangzhou-Philippines

We are US citizens flying into Hong Kong. Then we need to get to Philippines at some point. I think it would be cool to travel on land to Guangzhou or Shenzhen and fly out from there. Do we need an entry permit?

You need a transit visa since neither airport permits multi-stop or landside transit. Furthermore Shenzhen does not have visa-free transit of any kind.
