About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling on cruise ship through China - visa options

We are a family of 4 traveling on cruise ship from Hong Kong to Japan, stopping at Xiamen, Shanghai and Beijing before moving on to Japan. The stops in Chinese ports are only for a day. We plan on sourcing our own tours or self guided in these ports. Do we qualify for a 144 hour free transit? Traveling in March 2018. Thank you.

You do not and must get a visa. The visa-free transit is only for those departing from Shanghai and whose first port of call is outside Mainland China.

Thanks for your reply. Our first stop is technically Sinapore where we fly in and then get on the ship and cruise to Vietnam and Thailand before arriving in Hong Kong for our second leg of our back to back cruise. Do we qualify for any of the free transit- I see there are a few options available.

Unfortunately you don't since you are stopping at three mainland Chinese ports, so getting either a G (transit) or L (tourist) visa is your only option.
