About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transiting 2 cities (Beijing & Shanghai) Staying hotel in Beijing and planning city tour at Shanghai

Hi: We are US citizen. Travelling to US (LAX) via Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG). We have 7 hours layover at Beijing (PEK) where we are staying in a hotel. From Beijing we will fly to Shanghai (PVG) on our way to LAX. In Shanghai (PVG) we will have 11 hour layover. During this layover at Shanghai we are planning to take a city Tour. Is this route qualifies for 72/144 hours free transit? My concerns is that we are staying in Beijing and getting out again at Shanghai. Do you think we will have a problem? Do we have to do anything extra?

Thanks

Your route qualifies for 24 hours direct transit in China (from scheduled arrival time in Beijing to scheduled departure time from Shanghai). If your stay in China is longer than 24 hours then you would need a visa.

Thank you for your answer. We are scheduled to be landing at Beijing (PEK) on January 05, 2018 at 11:50 PM layover 7 hours staying a Hotel then flying from PEK to Shanghai (PVG) at 7:35 arriving PVG at 10:00 AM any layover 11 Hours (Planning City tour). Departing Shanghai (PVG) at 9:00 PM on January 06, 2018. So the total transit time in Beijing and Shanghai is around 21 hours. I think we are OK. Thanks
