144 Visa or not?

I am so confused. I want to travel from Okinawa to Shanghai and back to Okinawa. I only want to be in Shanghai for four days, and that includes the day I fly in and the day I fly out. I am not leaving Shanghai. Am I eligible for the 144 hour free transit, or do I have to get a regular entry permit for China?

You need a visa if you are not in transit.

Sooooo, yes. I would need to purchase a visa? Only eligible for the 144 if I am stopping off in Shanghai for a few days and going on to someplace else. - NOT back to Okinawa.

Yes, you are right. If you travel like Okinawa-Shanghai-another place instead of Japan, you are eligible for the 144 hr free transit then.
