Do I need a stay visa to leave the airport even though its within the 24 hour period?

Hi I am flying from Bangkok to New York, USA and have a 16 hour layover in Beijing. I want to leave the airport to tour the city

Hi, you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing if you travel like that. No visa is needed to leave the airport to tour the city. Nice trip!
