About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa Free Traansit with no plans to leave airport

I have a three-hour layover in Shanghai. Is there any requirement for me to leave customs or can I just stay “airside”?

That depends on whether you are holding the onward boarding passes or switching terminals. If you need to move between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 then clearing immigration and customs is mandatory. If you don't have an onward boarding pass (or not checked in for the next flight) then you most likely will need to clear immigration and customs as well.
