Hi, you won’t qualify for the 72 hour free transit anymore because the 72 hour policy only allows the traveler to transit in one Chinese city. Then you should apply for a visa in advance.

Thanks for your advice Rex, however I am not transiting through two Chinese cities, Haikou will be my departure city from where I will have obtained a 15 day VOA from the second part of my journey earlier on, Haikou will be my embarkation city, from there I will be travelling back to Sydney stopping over in Qingdao, hence the Qingdao 72 hour free transit visa would still apply to my case I believe.

As you already have a visa for mainland China, you don't need to (and can't) use the 72-hour transit since there is no immigration control between Hainan and the rest of Mainland China. Yes, Hainan counts as mainland China, while HK and Macau do not.
