About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hour visa exemption for US Citizen

I have a valid US passport good for ten years. Plan a trip to China through Beijing to Quindao. Where we would like to drive around in that province and return out the same way in 72 hours.

Do I require a China entry permit or are we exempt. Thanksc

You need a visa. 72 hours free transit would allow you to stay only in Beijing. Having two stops (Beijing and Qingdao) immediately limits you to 24 hours direct transit in China.

It also sounds like you're not even in transit in China, so you clearly need a visa.

If you fly Country A-China-Country B you can qualify for 72 hours free transit (144 hours in Shanghai) but only in one city in China. If you want to visit both Beijing and Qingdao you either need a visa or you need to complete your transit in 24 hours.
