About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

visit Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau

If I am applying for the 144-hr free transit trip because I am from the US, do I still need to apply for an active visa to visit Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau? The information listed is a bit confusing. Thank you!

US Citizens do not need to apply for a visa for Macau or Hong Kong for short term stay. Shanghai 144hr free transit applies if country coming into Shanghai is different to the country leaving Shanghai. Hong Kong and Macau are considered as special regions and are considered as not China for travel immigration purposes. If you are staying more than the permitted time in Shanghai then a China visa is required.
