About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit visa in Shanghai for two days

My colleague is Slovenian citizen and will travel from Geneva via Zurich to Shanghai and stay there for two days. Would he be eligible for the 72 hours free transit? He would then return via Frankfurt to Geneva or does the transit in Frankfurt, Germany, not count as a third country?
Thanks so much in advance for your help :-)

Zurich-Shanghai-Frankfurt is fine for 72 hours without a visa. The other flights on your itinerary aren't relevant to Chinese immigration.
