Vancouver to Chiang Mai w stop in Shanghai

I'm traveling Vancouver, BC to Chiang Mai, Thailand with a stop in Shanghai. I do not have my Shanghai to Chiang Mai leg booked yet but Would like to spend 2 days in shanghai. My return is Chiang Mai to Vancouver with a stop in Shanghai for 4 hours. Does my itinerary on the way to Chiang Mai allow me to stay in shanghai for 2 days without having to get a visa?

Vancouver-Shanghai-Chiang Mai-Shanghai-Vancouver is obviously fine for 144 hrs visa-free transit in Shanghai in both directions if you are flying on a qualifying passport. But you must be able to show your confirmed ticket from Shanghai to Chiang Mai when you check-in at Vancouver.
