About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

JFK to HKG. HKG to Shanghai to JFK

I am looking to visit Hong Kong (HKG) from USA (JFK) holding a US passport for one day. Upon leaving HKG to JFK, I want to visit my family in Shanghai for 3 days again using a US passport. So is departing from HKG (holding US Passport) --> PVG --> JFK. Am I qualify for the 144-hour free transit? Thanks.

Yes Mike, HKG > PVG > DESTINATION is a common plan.
I recently did the same myself recently.

The official rules are that the country you enter from and the country you depart to must be different.

So JFK > HKG > PVG > JFK is fine
but JFK > HKG > PVG > HKG > JFK is not.

also works in reverse (and you may or may not find better flight deals)

JFK > PVG > HKG > JFK etc etc
the key part is like I said, arrive from and depart to must be different countries (and not china, except Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan)
