US passport traveling through Shanghai to Thailand

Hello- will I need to apply for a visa if I am a US citizen traveling to Thailand with a 15 Hr layover in Shanghai. There is a layover both going to Thailand and returning to the states. 15hrs going and 19 hrs coming back to the states. The airline will be providing a hotel going but not coming back.

Nik, do you mean you will travel like US-Shanghai(15 hours)-Thailand-Shanghai(19 hours)-US? If yes, you don't need to apply for a visa for that because you are able to use free transit in Shanghai in both ways. Nice trip!
