About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hr free transit for a US citizen traveling in Japan (tourist).

I would like to visit Shanghai for 3 days, and then return to Japan. I understand I qualify for 144 hour free transit exemption, but is it ok to return to Japan, or do I need to return to a "third country?"

Thanks!

Japan-China-Japan isn't a transit, so obviously this route does not qualify for free transit. You need a visa, or you need to travel Japan-China-Another country (not Japan and not China).
