Leaving Beijing airport while on an 11hr layover?

I’m looking at flying from London to Sydney via PEK. The flight I’m looking at has an 11hr layover at PEK and I don’t really fancy sitting in the airport that long. Could I leave to explore the city for a few hours? Do I need a via? Is it possible/advised or is it complete pointless entertaining the idea?
Thanks in advance

Well, you can have an exploration to the city.
And no visa is needed, but you need to apply for a 72-hour free stay.
By the way, you can pay a visit to Tiananmen Square. Take Airport Express and transfer to metro line 2 at Dongzhimen, and another transfer to line 1 at Jianguomen. Get off at Tiananmen East. It takes about 1 hour. Near the square, you can also visit Forbidden City.
Last but not least, you are suggested to back to the airport 2 hours early.
