About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have an 11hr wait in Shanghai between the UK and Sydney,

would I need to apply for anything before hand to leave the airport for the day? thanks.

Michelle, you don't need to apply for a visa because you can enjoy 24 hour free transit in Shanghai. If you want to leave the airport during your stay, just apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport.
