About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US-HK-Shanghai-HK-US

I am traveling from US to Hong Kong and then plan to go to Shanghai for 3 days then back to Hong Kong and have a confirmed flight back to the US a few days later. Am I qualified for the 144 hour free transit?

That's not transit at all so you definitely need a visa.
