Residence permit on passport question

I have recently changed jobs and locations to Shanghai and within the first day or so I applied at the police station and was given a print out of Temporary registration form but they didnt take my passport. It has been over 2 months since this was done... I am not sure if my prior residence permit was cancelled yet either from prior employer...Should I be concerned and what should I do?
