No, you cannot use visa free travel if you travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. If Shenzhen is your final destination, you will have to apply and obtain a Shenzhen 5 days visa on arrival at three designated border crossings, preferably at Lo Wu / Luohu. The price for a visa is affordable 130 CNY. With this visa you are limited to Shenzhen city limits and after your stay you can return to Hong Kong by taking any border crossing and any mean of transport, high speed train included. There is a way how to use 240 hour visa free transit, but in that case you have to include Macau. For example, you can take a ferry from Hong Kong to Macau and then travel by ferry from Macau to Shekou (Shenzhen neighborhood). Before your travel to Shenzhen, you will have to decide when and how will you return back to Hong Kong from mainland China and you will buy your ferry, train or plane ticket from some place within mainland China to Hong Kong. So, you have to appear with a ticket from mainland China to Hong Kong in your hand at the time of your boarding the ferry from Macau to Shekou. When you reach Shekou, you will not apply for a visa on arrival, but for a temporary entry permit within 240 hour visa free transit scheme by presenting your ticket from, for example, Guangzhou to Hong Kong by train. Also, you should present your accommodation booking for at least the first overnight in mainland China because you will be asked to provide the name of the hotel. After that, when your permit is granted, you will head to the immigration and then you are free to travel and explore a major part of mainland China. You should have in mind that you will really have to return to Hong Kong by taking exactly that train, plane or ferry you have bought your ticket for. Also, you will use your UK passport. Have a nice journey.
