About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit
72 hour transit qualifier

Hi - Pls confirm that following it itinerary qualifies for 72hour transit - Australian passport

Sin KL - 17 Oct ETD 6:40 ETA 7:40
KL - Pudong - 17 Oct ETD 8:40 ETA 14:15
Pudong - KL - 20 Oct ETD 2:15 ETA 8:15
KL - Sin - 20 Oct ETD 9:15 ETA 10:15

Hi, it won't qualify for the free transit in Shanghai for KL - Pudong - KL is not a transit at all.

If we buy a one way from Pudong to Singapore directly and show the ticket to the counter will it be valid?

Yes, it will be valid if you buy a Shanghai-Singapore direct flight, but note that you MUST fly it, not just show the ticket to the counter. If you try to leave China on your original flight to KL then you can expect to be detained, fined and blacklisted.
