For a Canadian passport travelling SIN/via HKG/BOS/via Chicago/Shanghai/SIN, can we apply the 72hr transit visa

You mean you will travel like SIN-HK-BOS-Chicago-Shanghai (144 hours)-SIN? If yes, you can use the free transit in Shanghai.
