About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Hk to Shanghai then back to HK

3 girls with UK passports but currently working in Hong Kong so have the relevant visas are looking to go to Shanghai from Friday to Sunday, so fly from HK to Pudong then back to HK on the Sunday. Are we eligible for the 72 hour free transit or do we need to apply for one at the embassy etc before hand?

No, you are not eligible for the free transit in Shanghai because it is not a transit at all. You need to apply for a tourist L type in advance.
