Want to extend Q2 visa to Q1

Hi, I am on a Q2 type for 180 days (which will expire in November 2017)and is registered in Shanghai. Can i extend my visa from here or do i need to go back to my country and apply for a Q1 type? Also, my wife and i have a marriage certificate from England would it be ok for this purpose and what other documents would i need?

Amlan, it is possible for you to convert the Q2 type to Q1 type in China. It’s worth a try.
The required documents include your passport, the application form, a passport-style photo, valid registration form of temporary residence, an invitation letter from your wife and copy of her Chinese ID card, as well as your marriage certificate, and other documents the consular officers consider necessary.

Thanks a lot Neil. Your reply was really encouraging but as per my experiences with the UK entry permit you need to leave the country to make fresh applications of any kind. Although the extension of entry permits could be arranged from the same country. Another doubt i have regarding the reasons the authorities would ask for this change. I have read somewhere that they require some serious convincing for this and nowhere it said the Q2 can be converted to Q1. Although there were mentions of extending Q2 type for another 3 months and this could be repeated for one year.

If so, you can try to contact the local PSB to inquire the detailed information.

Hi Neil,

Turns out you can do that from shanghai all you need is a medical certificate from a list of hospitals (the list is available at enquiry counters)and the attested copy of your marriage certificate (attestated by chinese embassy or consular services abroad). You also need to get it translated if written in any other languages other than chinese or english (again ask for a list of institutes which are eligible to do the translation) Takes 7 workin g days to get a visa.

Hello,
I'd like to comment on that previous post... no it is NOT possible to convert Q2 into Q1 directly inside China, as China doesn't have that authority (I asked myself the entry/exit bureau). Closest is to go to Hong Kong.
