Online tickets for Forbidden City

HI I am a foreigner living in Beijing and I am having problems registering on the website to buy tickets. It is asking for an ID card number which I dont have. How do I register?

Well, as I know, you can also use you passport number for registering.
By the way, as I know, you also need a Chinese SIM card to finish the reservation.

Do we still need the Chinese SIM card after the registration?
And how is the payment method? Does the system accept credit card (Visa or Mastercard)?

No, the SIM card will be only used when you want to change or return after registration.
If you want to use the Mastercard, you can bind it to an Alipay.
