Question

Visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City on October 1, National Day.

We have three days available in Beijing: September 30, October 1, and October 2. We were thinking of visiting the Great Wall on September 30, and Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City on October 1, so that we don’t leave these two attractions for the last day.

Would you advise against visiting them on October 1, since it is National Day? Thank you!

You do need to make a reservation for the square and forbidden city. October is OK since the flag-raising ceremony would be more solemn and respectful but you already know that it will be super crowded. I advise you to reserve several attractions like summer palace, national museum, temple of heaven ... at the same time (normally 7 days in advance), and visit the ones you successfully reserve.
