About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK - Hong Kong - Shanghai - Japan

Does the 144 hour visa rule still count if you travel from UK to Hong Kong, then to Shanghai for 4 days, then to Japan - or do you need to be travelling to Shanghai from one of the qualified countries eg. UK-Shanghai?

Thank you!
