what do i do when transferring from a flight to shanghai to a flight to hong kong?

do i have to check out of the airport then check in again, do i have to have a visa

Claire, the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai will cover your trip, no visa is needed then. You'll get it at Shanghai when clearing immigration in the airport. If you will stay at a hotel in the city, maybe you need to check out of the airport then check in again.
