Shanghai 144 hour free transit Exemption

I'm a US passport holder, traveling to HK/Macau, then I will be flying from either HK or Macau to Shanghai, then back to the USA. I know there is a 144 hour free transit exemption period in Shanghai. I assume that 144 hour clock starts once I land in Shanghai, and my time in HK/Macau does not count towards that? I only plan on being in Shanghai for a few nights, then fly back to the USA. So I don't think i'll need any Visa? Can you confirm this ?

Brian, so you will travel like USA--HK/Macau-Shanghai(144 hr)-USA, right? If yes, you can enjoy 144 hr free transit policy then. No need to worry and nice trip!

That's correct. But I'll,be in HK much longer than 144 hours. I just wanted to make sure my time in HK/Macau did not count against my 144 hours. So the 144 hour clock starts after I arrive in Shanghai, it sounds like.

Your stay time in HK/Macau did not count against your 144 hours in Shanghai. No need to worry!
