About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72h free transit: Can country of origin and destination be the same?

Hi,
I have a German passport and I will be working in Singapore for two months. I would like to go to Shanghai for a long weekend. Will the 72h free transit option work for me since I am not coming from/going to Germany?
If not - is it possible to do a work-around e.g. fly Singapore-Shanghai inbound and then fly Shanghai-Kuala Lumpur outbound and continue to Singapore from there on?
Appreciating your help! Thanks in advance!

Singapore-Shanghai-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore will work. Singapore-Shanghai-Singapore won't.

Hi Rob,
thanks for your reply!
Would it be possible to have a lay-over in Kuala Lumpur on the way there or would that make Malaysia my country of origin?
Thank you so much, Len

No. Singapore-Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore doesn't work. Only the places immediately before and immediately after Shanghai matter, and KL-Shanghai-KL isn't a transit.
