72h free transit: can country of origindestination be the same?

Question

Hi,I have a German passport and I will be working in Singapore for two months. I would like to go to Shanghai for a long weekend. Will the 72h free transit option work for me since I am not coming from/going to Germany?If not - is it possible to do a work-around e.g. fly Singapore-Shanghai inbound and then fly Shanghai-Kuala Lumpur outbound and continue to Singapore from there on?Appreciating your help! Thanks in advance!KR

Singapore-Shanghai-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore will work.  Singapore-Shanghai-Singapore won't.

No. Singapore-Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore doesn't work. Only the places immediately before and immediately after Shanghai matter, and KL-Shanghai-KL isn't a transit.
