14 hour stopover in Guangzhou

I am flying from San Francisco to Denpasar with a stop over in Guangzhou, 5am to 7 pm. China Southern Airline has informed me that we can't exit the airport. Do you know if we can stay at a hotel in the airport during that time? Any options for exiting the airport to visit the city?
