About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA Passport

On my returning flight from Phuket, I have two layovers in China. The first one is in Chengdu for 22 hours, and from that airport we fly to Shanghai and have our layover for 11 hours, to then fly to LAX. Do we need a Chinese visa or can we apply for the 72 transit even though we plan on staying in the airport the entire time?

Mel, you won’t qualify for the 72 hour free transit because the 72 hour policy only allows the traveler to transit in one Chinese city. Then you should apply for a visa in advance for that.
