Layover in Beijing going to Singapore

I am flying Airchina from LAX to Singapore. There is a 14 hour layover in Beijing. If I want to leave the airport for 8 hours do I need an entry permit?

You qualify for the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing, but you may be required to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office when you arrive at the airport. Afterwards, you can leave the airport to explore the city. No visa will be needed for that.
