About:How to Apply for a China Visa

Flying from Japan to Shanghai - Less than 48 hours

I currently live in Japan on a 1-year visa. My passport is from the United States. Will I require a further entry permit to visit Shanghai for less than 48 hours?

If you will go to a third country or region rather than Japan and China, you can enjoy free transit then. No visa will be required.
