Would the 144 hour free transit work for the following?

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Beijing - Hong Kong

No. You obviously need a visa for this, because you have two stops in China and it's not even a transit anyway.

Thanks! I realized I answered my own question after reading through some more of the comments.

I ended up changing my departure flight out of Shanghai. Hopefully I won't have any problems. Just boarded my flight to Shanghai, will comment with further updates!
