Unless you belong to the countries with 72hr free transit...
According to the airlines I booked a ticket with, if you want to stay overnight in Guangzhou and need to leave the airport, you must obtain a transit (G). The 24hr free transit is only airside (not leaving the airport). I confirmed this in China embassy yesterday.
