Flying to Shanghai - Going to Japan - Leaving from Shanghai

I'm planning a trip to visit a friend in Japan, but the flights to Shanghai or Hong Kong are so much cheaper than to Japan. So I'm hoping to fly into China, stay as long as possible, then fly to Japan to visit my friend for a week or so, fly back to China in order to board a flight back to the US. After reading these policies, I'm not too sure that I'll be able to return to Shanghai after a week in Tokyo if I spend the full 6 days in Shanghai. Should I spend 5 days and leave 1 extra day to fly back home, or does it not work like the Schengen visa?

It does not work like Schengen. You'll ve given a 6-day entry permit EVERY TIME you fly an eligible route. There's no limit on how many times you can use the facility, nor a restriction on total days you can stay in a period of time like Schengen.

So if I come in and stay for one week and leave, I could come back in a week or so later and it would be the same rules - only 6 days in?
