Travel to Shanghai from the US

If I am only traveling to Shanghai and I keep my entire length of stay under 144 hours, will I still be able to participate in the Visa free program? So flight would be from LAX to PVG and return from PVG to LAX. Also, do the hours of the Visa begin from the time the flight arrives until the departure flight to leave?
Thanks in advance

Well, according to your situation, you cannot enjoy the 144-hour visa free policy because you will have a round trip from/to US, so you may apply a visa for your trip. The hours of the Visa at PVG begin from the 00:00 on the next day after the flight arrival until the departure flight to leave.
