Passport väalidity

I am a Greek citizen with permanent residency in Thailand that will travel to Xi'an from Bangkok and back to Bangkok end of March 2018 for 3 days and my passport EXPIRES early May 2018. I obviously need a tourist L type. The 6 month validity is aimed at the time of obtaining the visa or at the time of Travel?
