China 72 hour policy

If I were to fly from Chicago to Shanghai nonstop, and then return via Tokyo will that fulfill the 72 hour nine visa requirement. The return through Tokyo is only a layover for a return flight to Chicago, and not an actual stop to visit Tokyo.
Thanks Brad
