About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 Hour Visa Free stay in Shanghai

Hello, I am going in November from LA-Shanghai-Hong Kong. I am not able to obtain a China tourist L type because I was born in Shanghai, 1946 and moved to Hong Kong in 1950, then to US in 1966. I have no China documents to meet the application requirement. Do you think I will be able to use the 144 Free transit option? Thank you.

You can do that, but it is very likely that you'll be required to use a Home Return Permit in the future since you may still possess Chinese nationality (assuming you still have a Hong Kong ID card).

Thank you for your quick response. I do not have documents from both China and Hong Kong (After leaving HK in 1966, my parents surrender our HK ID to the British Consulate in Los Angeles). Do you think they will allow me for the 144 Visa Free Stay? Thank you.

In that case you can still use the 144-hour transit, but I believe you are still considered a Chinese national by the HK government since you have resided in HK for over seven years.
