Can the China visa be renewed or updated: What do I need  to visit China in Sept, 2017, and if I need additional docs, where do you advise I begin the process?thanks for your time.

No, it cannot be renewed or updated. You need to apply for a new visa for that.If you go to China for tourism purpose, you need to provide passport and its photocopy, the application form, a passport-style photo, round trip air tickets and hotel booking record. Next, go to the embassy of China to submit the application.
