Charles, the business M type is issued to those who go to China for business purpose; the tourist L type is for sightseeing/tourism purpose.
If you go there for tourism purpose, you should provide those documents including your passport and its photocopy, a fully completed application form, a recently-taken passport-style photo, round trip air tickets and hotel reservation.
