About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Los Angeles- Hong Kong- Shanghai- Tokyo- Los Angeles

I would like to travel to these places in that order and stay 1-2 days at each. Do I need a visa? How do I apply for one?

Avain, you don’t need it because you will qualify for the free transit program in Shanghai.
USA passport holders can enjoy free entry to HK for a stay of not exceeding 90 days.

Thank you. Does the same apply for Shanghai and Tokyo? No visa for either of the three places right? I just want to be sure so I am not left or deported. Thank you

As for Shanghai, you can use the 144 hour free transit facility there, so no visa is needed.
US passport holders are allowed to enter Japan freely for a stay of not more than 90 days.
